Question: We have not yet discussed place-making in terms of the creation of art, of music, of literature, etc. What place do you think that these things, which we might put together as “cultural productions,” has in analyses of the eruption of political struggle? Your observations do not have to be based on research, per se. Think about how art, music, literature, and other cultural productions have shifted your own understanding of belonging, of community, and of the kind of world you want to bring into being, in meaningful ways.

Cultural production can often be interpreted as a form of cultural invasion, especially in the context of immigration. When looking at cultural shifts or new cultural re-inventions through the lens of extra-coloniality, I found that our senses of belonging and community changes as well. My opinions here are not quite based on research, but rather more relevant to my own perception and experiences. Just like the cases we have observed in this class, the groups of people who were unfairly treated due to forces out of their control can in turn unevenly reciprocate this treatment. Here, cultural productions became a bonding glue in between this group as well as a coherent defense to make sense of such unfair treatment.

Such defense may lead to political struggle at times in the form of revolutions. As we see in week 4, the March 1st Declaration of Independence from Korea may have prompted/promoted direct action opposition. This would be a prime example of how powerful speech and words can be in inciting bundled-up emotions and even transform that into active political uprisings. Words have the ability to explicate one’s elusive feelings. Specifically, the words from someone else who face the same situation, share the same difficulties who organize some facts in their schema of knowledge can be very persuasive. The rhetoric is also thought-provoking — it turns the outrage inward and calls for Koren citizens to unite their strengths. Words unites people to the same front, which can lead to eruption of social and political struggles.

I agree that cultural productions can lubricate in-group cohesiveness and strengthen group propagation for years to come. Art works with strong relevance to group identities are often considered as protected cultural relic. I think these relics not only are influential by its own meaning, they also provide a sense of pride for people who identify with such art works. Art and artist are often inseparable subjects in discussion. We always need to recognize the work with its creators. Whether it’s to praise such creativity or to condemn the meanings behind their artwork, the artist are often seen as sort of leader of cultural events and trends. Their portrayl of the world, through their lens, organized by their schema of knowledge, became something that everyone is able to see. The spread of such art then allowed more and more people to see the world through these artists’ lens. It is then very understandable that more and more people would prone to the artists’ ideologies and identify similar to him/her/them. The audience’s sense of belonging, community and their self-identified social identity would all change as a result of perceiving such artworks.

I also agree that cultural production can shift one’s mind in help constructing a world that one wants to participate in, which may lead to concrete bebavhioral changes in daily lives as a result of changed mindset. Some cultural productions may depict a utopia and/or shed light on a especially dark side of the world we’re living in. In both cases, these depictions could lead audience to think back to oneself and how we should conduct ourselves, either to subvert the darkness or to create a bettered environment for ourselves to live in. In other cases, some literature, drawings and music represent a culture in of itself. Such cultural production may be perceived as propogandas for that particular cultural group. In perceiving such artworks, the audience may have a clearer recognition of their own cultural identities and how to realize their goals in that position.
